Sometimes up to two years, whole spices—such as cinnamon sticks and cloves—can keep rather well. Should you ever be unsure, taste or sniff your spice. You should toss it if it smells or tastes weak.


    6. Mark for Simple Tracking

    Labeling your jars might save your life when you have an increasing collection of spices. Purchasing that jar of turmeric or paprika makes it quite easy to forget. Starting with the purchase date or a "best by" date, I have found that it helps greatly monitor freshness. This little effort will help you avoid the disappointment of finding a jar that ought to be flavorful lost its punch.
