Industry Knowledge: Pepper, called the King of Spices, has had a profound influence on both Eastern and Western cooking and economies. Whilst many countries owe their prosperity to this spice, the finest quality comes from India. Due to a combination of environmental influences, Indian Black Peppercorns are naturally larger, better shaped, more aromatic and more densely packed with flavour. Of the different varieties available from India, Regency brings you the finest quality of Black Peppercorns, known as the Malabar variety. It comes from the Malabar coast of southwestern India. In England, for grinding they mix Peppers of different origin. Malabar for weight and taste, Sumatra for colour, and Penang for strength. For much of the last two thousands years, pepper was a luxury for the very rich, a commodity so valuable that it was even used as money. It is even said that Attila the Hun demanded among other items 3,000 lbs. of pepper in ransom for the city of Rome.
Our Black Peppercorns confirms to the highest peppercorn standards. They have a density of around 580+ grams / litre (usually 620+), meaning they pack the strongest amount of flavour available per peppercorn. Each one is also greater than 5mm in diameter.
