Both my Chinese and Japanese grandma make zongzi (or chimaki in Japanese). Yet, they differ quite a bit. The ones made by my Japanese grandma are very simple and eaten with sweetened kinako (roasted soy bean powder). This is a very simple, easy to make salad. When I’m running out of time, or need some small side-dish to accompany a meal, I toss in tomato and avocado, and season with lemon, herb salt and olive oil. Very easy, yet, very tasty, especially when it’s served cool in this hot weather. When you have good herb salt, cooking becomes much easier. Zest of lemon juices adds beautiful flavor to this dish.
