Oregano is an important cooking herb, used across a wide range of cuisines. Unlike most herbs, Oregano is preferred dry as opposed to fresh, as it's flavours are more concentrated in the dried flake form. It's highly aromatic, with a herbal and slight bitter taste. Regency Oregano is made from 100 percent dried oregano leaves.

Industry Knowledge Oregano is known worldwide as one of the staple herbs of a kitchen spice and herb rack. In modern cooking, it's most popular in Italian-American cuisine. The history behind this change is highly interesting, as it was brought about in World War II. Soldier's returning from Europe brought back Oregano as "the Pizza herb", as it mimicked the essense of traditional Italian pizza flavour. The herb is also popularly used in Middle Eastern cuisine such as Greek, Lebanese and Turkish, which is where the herb originated centuries ago.
In industry, Oregano is sold on the basis of it's volatile oil content, as with most other herbs. Each herb's unique volatile oil content is what gives them their flavour. The greater the volatile oil, the more flavour in each Oregano leaf. Besides examining the uniqueness of each variety of Oregano, we also pay attention to making sure that we get the highest quality of the best tasting variety. Hence at Regency, we've settled on the highest naturally possible grade that Turkish Oregano leaves can attain. These sometimes get unbelievably intense, at 3% oil or more, and average around 2.5-2.7%, as they are naturally grown and processed. Learn more about Oregano.
