Shichimi Togarashi, commonly referred to in Japan as Shichimi, is the most popular chilli blend used all over Japan. It literally means 7 spices blend, and ours is mainly following the traditional recipe: Mild chilli powder, Sichuan Pepper, white sesame seeds, black sesame seeds, orange peel, seaweed and ginger powder. We have also added in a hint of poppy seeds for that extra addictive flavour. Shichimi recipes vary all over the country, and even house to house, but they are all made from the same pool of 8-9 ingredients (some variants also use hemp seed). Ours is slightly stronger on the chilli and sichuan pepper notes, as well as keeping that savoury balance with the seaweed powder. Shichimi Togarashi works great with all kinds of savoury food. It has a peppery initial taste, following by tart sour flavour from the orange, and savoury / nutty aftertaste from the sesame and seaweed. It's always served together with a bowl of ramen and udon. You can also sprinkle on top of tempura, and also get adventurous with popcorn, pizza, fried chicken, roast vegetables and even salad! Also known as shichimi, japanese chilli powder, Shichi-mi tōgarashi,

Directions for use This is an all purpose "spicy" topping blend. Use for sushi, ramen, tempura and any other savoury food to add japanese spicy flavour notes. It is best sprinkled on top of a finished dish, rather than cooking.
